The Zack’s Place 4th Annual Turkey Trot 5k Walk and Run was a huge success with over 800 people participating in the event. The event was held at 10AM on Thanksgiving day. The weather was cold – 34F - but dry and sunny. There were many special things about the event from the sponsorships to the danishes. The event committee of about 8 members begins planning for the event in March, prior to the Turkey Trot. The jobs range from prizes, sponsors, posters and applications, refreshments, PR, registration, timing, volunteers, traffic control and the event planning. Each committee member puts a lot of hard work into their task and the outcome was obvious.
Registration was slow, with only 500 registered the day before the event but on the day of 300 more walkers and runners registered. Each race participant got a t-shirt upon registering.
The event began with an O’MMM which was led by Tita Manice. Then afterwards the crowd was silent for a prayer which was written by the Zack’s Place participants and read by Tanner Dow. Peggy Ogilvy and her partner Dave sang a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem and then the race began. Runners took off and walkers leisurely crossed the start line. The first male runner crossed the line in 16:39 followed by the first female, ANDREA COSTELLA-DAWS IN 18:42. The race finished on the green where there was coffee, provided by the Woodstock Inn, and danishes provided by The Quechee Club. The Tad Davis band played on the green and awards followed.
This year the Turkey Trot earned over $26,000 for Zack’s Place from a strong sponsorship and the amount of people attending the event. All proceeds will go towards operational costs at Zack’s Place. |
